An exhilarating morning

This morning I was awoken a little before 6:00 AM by a knock on the door. I noticed the house was very cold and dark as I stumbled downstairs to see what the commotion was. It was a guy from the utility company trying to get into my back yard where the transformer is for my area of the neighborhood. I put on my coat and some shoes and grabbed a flashlight to help this guy out. My gate was frozen up so we banged on it until it opened up. After a little checking, he found that the fuse in the transformer had blown. Everyone here has heat pumps and they don't work well below about 30 degrees and need to kick on emergency power which draws about 3 times as much current.
Anyway, this nice gentlemen heads back to his truck to find a fuse. While he he's gone, I'm standing in the back yard and it's pitch black out. The air is completely still, and the temperature is around -1. When the air is cold, the molecules contract, the air becomes more dense, and the beautiful effect of this is that sound travels much further than normal.
Off in the distance, I can hear a goose honking. Then every 5 or 6 seconds, he calls out again. It starts getting louder and sounds like it's headed straight for me. After a couple of minutes or so, it sounds almost overhead. Almost holding my breath, I scan the sky trying to see where it is coming from. Then, appearing as a soft white V-shaped ghost, a majestic flock of geese fly right over my house, maybe 150 feet above or so. Their wings beating the thick air in the moonlight seemed to cause a shimmer as they fly by. Every so often a single goose gives out a call, as if to provide some direction for the rest. All the others remained silent, following their leader in echelon formation.
I was thankful that we lost power and I was woken up and dragged my sleepy body out in the cold. I would have missed the opportunity to see those beautiful geese in such a silent and magical setting in any other way.
Every negative in life has a more powerful positive. You just have to look for it and be able to recognize it.

Brian, your dad forwarded this to me, and I'm so glad he did! Sounds like a dream. It's amazing to me the beautiful things that can happen out of unexpected circumstances.
